"Kimekomi" is a traditional Japanese technique in which grooves are dug into a material made of hardened paulownia paste, and fabric is inserted into the grooves with a spatula (working the fabric into the wood grain) and then worn. Mataro dolls are the only ones recognized by Kamigamo Shrine as the authentic successors of Kimekomi dolls.
